Well, I can say I hope I never get a phone call like that again! Hearing your husband say he's had an accident while hunting alone is a scary thing! Hearing "I am crawling out of the woods don't hang up the phone" will replay over and over in my head. I am so thankful that what could have been SO MUCH WORSE...wasn't. I hear about tree stand accidents with much different outcomes than this one! While he is in a lot of pain...fractured vertebrae, broken bones, sprained ankle, and some cuts and bruises...he will recover! This is a GREAT report! I find myself once again counting my blessings!!! Love this guy...

So thankful for what is becoming a "speedy recovery"!

Wow, where do I begin? My mother is the most amazing woman I know! Seriously! When people see her they always comment on her outer beauty...how great she looks (and always has...although she'd say that's not true.) There's SO much more to her than that. Her outer beauty is just the overflow of what's on the inside.

When people say you look too young to be Tina's mom...she'll tell you she is. My mom had me at the young age of 18. When I was 18 I was so self-centered, as most 18 year olds are. Not my mom, she was learning to put her needs and wants on the back burner so she could give everything she had to loving and caring for me. I can't even imagine how hard that must have been...but she did it and did it well!

My mom works with special needs adults and continues to set aside her needs and wants to love and care for them. While so many her age are thinking and dreaming about retirement and living their lives more for themselves...not her, she's constantly talking about doing for others and how she can serve more. She has a tough job, but nobody does it like she does. God has given her the ability to look at people and know their needs and how to care for them in a special way...so you can see why she is great at what she does. She views her work as a blessing...and shares with us how much God is teaching her through her experiences with these wonderful people. I wish she'd do more for herself...she deserves it.

Not only is my mom the best mother, but she's also an awesome "Grammy"! My kids are so fortunate to have her so plugged into their lives. She's always there...and we are so happy she is! So, to the most selfless, hard-working, thoughtful, kind, caring, compassionate, funny, creative, intelligent,beautiful, devoted woman I know...I say Happy Mother's Day! I'm so glad you're mine!

Brownie Zoo Over-Nighter...

Emma's Brownie troop did an over-nighter activity at the Kansas City Zoo. She had such a great time. The best part she said...that her Grammy went with her! My mom is a trooper for sure! Before they left for the zoo they kicked off the night with a pizza party. While at the zoo the girls and sponsors participated in an "after dark" outdoor hike. According to Emma they even saw a few animals. Several activities followed before crashing for the night...ending with an early breakfast at the zoo before making their way back home. Such a fun experience for these girls...

Thanks again Grammy for going...Emma loved every minute of it.

Easter...It's About The Lamb...

It's about The Lamb, not the bunny...the first year we didn't give the Easter Bunny a place in our family celebration. I really wanted the focus to be on Jesus this year. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the other stuff...but He is the reason we celebrate Easter. Will is starting to understand more about what Jesus did for us on the cross...he was full of questions. Aren't we all? I'm sure the questions will change as he gets older...I know mine have. My biggest question..."Who am I that Jesus would die for me"...He did, even me! To know the magnitude of my sins shows me just how big God's grace really is. So, today we celebrated our Savior...not the bunny. A few pics to sum up the day...

The State of the American Church...

Here is a cut out from an article that was written by Francis Chan regarding the State of the American Church. What are your thoughts? I know what mine are...

A Gathering Force
By Francis Chan

Is there any logic in believing that God started His Church as a Spirit-filled, loving body with the intention that it would evolve into entertaining, hour-long services? Was he hoping that one day people would be attracted to the Church not because they care for one another, not because they are devoted to Him, not because the supernatural occurs in their midst, but because of good music and entertainment?

Try to imagine what conclusions you would come to if you had no prior church experience. The things in church services might make sense to the American church-attendee, but they don’t make sense biblically.

Picture yourself on an island with only a Bible. You’ve never been to a church-you’ve never even heard of one. The only ideas you have about church are what you’ve read in your Bible. Then you enter a building labeled “church” for the first time. What would you expect to experience as you entered that building? Now compare that to what you actually experience when you attend church.

GANG RELATED
A while back, an ex-gang member got baptized at our church. He fell in love with Jesus and turned from his old lifestyle. But after several months at the church, he stopped attending. When we asked him why he stopped attending, he answered: “I had the wrong idea of what church was going to be like. When I joined the church, I thought it was going to be like joining a gang. You see, in the gangs we weren’t just nice to each other once a week-we were family.”

That killed me because I knew that what he expected is what the church was intended to be. It saddened me because I realized that the gangs paint a better picture of loyalty and family than the local church body does.

But what if the church looked like this?

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42-47)

That describes what the ex-gang member was looking for. It describes what the world is waiting for. I used to look at this passage as something that was wonderful but could never happen in the twenty-first century. There are just too many cultural obstacles for the Holy Spirit to overcome. He is powerful enough to raise the dead, but not powerful enough to form a sharing and loving body in our individualistic society. I doubted God’s ability to stir a body of believers to love tirelessly and give without restraint. I reasoned that this type of fellowship was probably not intended for our time. Besides, we don’t have time to love like this.

Looking back, I wonder if I came to those conclusions because there was a part of me that wasn’t sure I wanted it. It’s interesting how much our theology is driven by desire.

There came a point where the elders at our church concluded that there was no reason why God wouldn’t want the church to look like it did in the beginning. From there we reasoned that if God wants that, then we want it too. But the exciting part came when we resolved not to settle for anything less. We would pursue this for His Church regardless of how many would be turned off and move to other churches. If this is God’s standard, then we will one day give an account for how we led His people toward the biblical model.

But where do we go from here? The hard part is answering the question of how. There are probably many who want our churches to function like the early church, but how do we get there?

START WITH WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL
In other words, start with yourself. It’s wrong to blame others for the condition of the Church. And it’s silly for leaders to blame followers. God wasn’t satisfied when Adam blamed Eve or when Eve blamed the serpent.

Our elders started with what we could control. We can’t control other people. We can’t make the congregation “break bread in their homes” or “sell their possessions.” We also can’t control God. We can’t make Him do “wonders and miraculous signs” through us. I can, however, sell my possessions as people have needs. I do have control over that, so that became the first logical step. As we do our part, we trust God to bring about the “awe” and “wonders” in His time.

It was a beautiful time of sharing as our elders laid “everything” at each others’ feet. We surrendered the keys to our cars, homes, and bank accounts. I actually believed the elders who looked me in the eyes and said, “What’s mine is yours. If anything ever happens to you, I will support and care for your kids as much as I would care for my own. I will be your life insurance.” And because they had a history of genuine sacrifice for the sake of the gospel, I trusted what they said. From there, we began going to some of our friends in the congregation and expressing our commitment to them (something anyone can do).

And now this mentality is spreading. New life is permeating the church as individuals are backing up their words with sacrifice. Cars and homes are being sold or given away. Expensive vacations are joyfully replaced with spending on others. People are being taken into homes-not only for meals, but to live. It’s still the beginning of the process, and most people probably still come for the teaching or the music, but there’s a growing number at our church who are coming to be with their church family and they don’t care about who’s teaching or leading music.

THERE MUST BE MORE
Something real was happening in the early Church. It was something of the Spirit, too powerful to be replicated by human effort. Imagine taking a friend to one of their church gatherings. Your friend might not experience a smoothly run, professional service. But one thing he would experience: God. Do we even need to ask which is better? So much of church growth today has nothing to do with the Holy Spirit. The right team of talented people can make any church grow. When people sit through creative services, is it really God they’re experiencing?

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying that we shouldn’t give our best to God. If you’re a musician, work diligently at your music. If you’re a teacher, labor intensely over your messages. I’m just asking you to be willing to rethink what you’re doing and ask: How can we create a more biblical environment where people see and experience God?

I’m reminded of the story of Gideon in Judges 7. God tells Gideon, “You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her, announce now to the people, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.” (Judges 7:2-3)

If you remember the story, God then reduced the army to 300 soldiers. God did not just defeat the Midianites-He was careful to do it in a way that gave Him all the glory. He did not want to allow Israel to boast “that her own strength has saved her.”

May people see our churches and know that mere human beings could not have created what they experienced. May we seek the priorities of the early church and trust God to once again produce the fruit of the early Church.

“And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:47)

Still Crazy for Crazy Love...

Last time I posted about this book...I posted the longest post EVER! I am still so excited about this book. The great part...I'm even more excited about God, and what He is doing all around me. I know several of you that have picked this book up and I can't wait to hear what your thoughts are as you read through it.

God is still working in my heart and showing me that I pretty much stink at loving Jesus and others. Have you ever thought you were ok at something only to find out that your measuring stick was a problem? That's where I am. I've taken my focus off of others...quit comparing myself to them and now my eyes are focused on Jesus. Praying that He will open my eyes and my heart so I can truly love the way He wants me to. Can't wait to hear from you...and hear how God is working in your life.

Get ready...this is by far the LONGEST post I've ever had...

I just finished reading 'Crazy Love' by Francis Chan. This book was on my list for a while and I finally had some time to pour over it this weekend. Can I say it is Amazing? Ok...It is AMAZING!

So many things in this book just hit me like a ton of bricks. Let me start with something I've been struggling with for quite sometime...where I live. I have lived in one of the wealthiest counties in the country for most of my life. Since I was about six years old I have been a resident somewhere within Johnson County, Ks. As a child I loved it...as a teen it was great...as I approached my adult life suddenly the way I viewed my surroundings began to change. The things that I used to think were fantastic...well, they almost started to make me...I don't know how else to say it...they started to make me sick.

Houses that look more like hotels, cars of every make and model...but almost always new, only the best in fashion, schools that are top notch, fine dining, shopping, shopping...and more shopping. As I started to see how much we have I began to see I am surrounded by people that strive to be more than comfortable in every way. Myself included!! Again....it started to make me sick. I was no longer enticed by it...now it felt more like a disease. (I've heard it refereed to as 'affluenza') Could we all really need this much? Is it right? Is it wrong? When is enough, enough?

I went on mission trips and was introduced to unbelievable poverty. I couldn't believe how people were living. I couldn't believe what wasn't available to them, and what they were living without. Yet, they seemed happier than many JoCoers I'd see bogged down with so much. How could this be? Another thing that I began to see was how hungry they were for God. They were desperate for him. Again....back in JoCo it seemed so difficult to share Christ and the need for a savior. People didn't seem to 'need' anything.

It was harder and harder for me every time I'd take one of these trips and then re-enter this place and the riches that surrounded me. I was ashamed and embarrassed by my surroundings. I knew God's word addressed many issues about money and wealth.
(Ecclesiastes 5:10; Matthew 6:24; 1 Timothy 6:10) My favorite: Hebrews 13:5
"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you'." I knew it wasn't "money", but the love of money that was "evil". I've had so much trouble trying to figure that one out. I know how to tell if someone loves books, or music, or sports...but money, that's just a little trickier. I began to feel so judgemental. I just couldn't figure this one out. I'd pray and pray for God to give me understanding...and at times he did. Other times...I still wasn't sure.

I would think to myself...I get why 'the world' wants all of this, but I just don't get why we Christians do too. Shouldn't we be different...shouldn't we be content with less...shouldn't we want to give more away....shouldn't we? Then, is it right or is it wrong? Again...in need of clarity.

In the book Crazy Love...Chan states:

"Lukewarm people are thankful for their luxuries and comforts, rarely consider trying to give as much as possible to the poor. They are quick to point out "Jesus never said money is the root of all evil, only that the love of money is." Untold numbers of lukewarm people feel "called" to minister to the rich; very few feel "called" to minister to the poor.

He goes on to say..."People who are obsessed with Jesus aren't consumed with their personal safety and comfort above all else. Obsessed people care more about God's kingdom coming to this Earth than their own lives being shielded from pain or distress." At this point I'm thinking...I knew it! People, especially us Christ followers shouldn't want all of this. Jesus told the disciples to give up everything and follow him. Why are we any different? Aren't we disciples...followers of Christ?

Then...page 166. "Should you put your house on the market today and downsize? Maybe. Should you quit your job? Maybe. OR perhaps God wants you to work harder at your job and be His witness there. Does he want you to move to another city or country (or in my case "county")? Maybe. Perhaps he wants you to stay put and open your eyes to the needs of your neighbors. (remember, my neighbors don't 'need' anything...right???) ...My suggestion as you think, make decisions, and discern how God would have you live is to ask yourself, "Is this the most loving way to do life? Am I loving my neighbor and my God by living where I live, by driving what I drive,by talking how I talk?" I urge you to consider and actually live as though each person you come in contact with is Christ."

Then it hits me (like a ton of bricks)...just like Chan says, "those poor rich people". Of course...EACH person I come in contact with. I have been so busy being bothered that I have never asked God to break my heart for these people. They too need a savior...desperately!! (Proverbs 28:22; Matthew 19:16; Matthew 19:23) and then:

Matthew 19:24, "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Ok, God...I get it. For so long I have asked you to release me from this place so I can help those in need. Well, here I am...surrounded by those in need. So many don't even know they are in need...they have bought into the security plan the world offers. Suddenly, what makes me "sick"...is ME, for not asking God to give me the same burden to love these people as I have for those that live with so much less. Now, I know why God has kept me right where he has...because I have a need too...a need to love others the way he does and to see them through HIS eyes.

I don't know who reads this or not. I don't know where you are in your life. Please know, that this wasn't meant to make anyone who "has" to feel bad or that you aren't living your life the way God wants you to. That's between you and God. Should you sell your house, downsize...like I would know that; I'm having trouble figuring that out for me and my family. However, I encourage you to ask yourself the same questions I've been asking myself...and most important ask God what HE would want YOU to do.

Crazy Love...it's a book that challenges you to love God deeper and live it out loud!

*(If 100 people represented the world's population, 53 of those would live on less than $2 a day...so we need to be careful when we say that doesn't apply to me..."I'm not rich". Compared to who?)

I can't believe it's been SIXTEEN years since we said "I Do"! I am so incredibly thankful for Larry. He's a wonderful husband and an amazing father. He never puts his needs or wants ahead of ours or anyone else now that I think about it. They say a girl marries someone like her father. Well, they are the most selfless men I know. Larry strives to do better and be better everyday and he inspires me to do the same.

I can honestly say....every year is better than the year before. Through our ups and downs God is growing us individually to be more like Him and THAT is what makes a marriage so great...a GREAT God. God never calls us to be a "perfect" couple....just "faithful". Faithful to Him first and then to one another. He'll take care of the rest. Thanking God today for protecting, shaping, and growing our marriage. Only God can do that!

In spite of the crowds and the lines of people...by the way, we were able to miss almost every long wait in line!!...it was fun to be with friends and enjoy a day admiring all of the beautiful decor. Mary Carol's Holiday Open House...

I am really looking forward to today. Mary Carol, the owner of Nell Hill's is having her annual Holiday Open House. I wanted to do this last year and as usual time just got away from me. However, not this year.

Clear Direction...

I know I've posted this before...on facebook. I was reminded of it the other day. While it makes me laugh...it also makes me stop and think.

This little worksheet showed up one day in Will's backpack. I'm sure the goal was to find the most direct route for the fireman. Like I said, this makes me laugh...how all over the place his route is. I've said that it just confirms how Larry is always telling me I need to map out my day a little better...to save on gas, etc. Looks like Will is following in my footsteps!

So, not only do I laugh at this...It's also a good reminder that when I'm taking matters into my own hands how all over the place I feel. Lost without a real sense of direction. When my focus shifts and I begin to rely on myself instead of God this is how I feel.

As I've been praying for clear direction...I'm also praying that God will give me everything I need to trust him and his guidance. Isaiah 42:16 says this...

"I will lead the blind by ways they have not known,
along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light before them
and make the rough places smooth.
These are the things I will do;
I will not forsake them."

Trusting in His perfect plan and His guidance down these unfamiliar paths.

Just a few pics before it gets dark out. The kids have been asking how much longer until we can go trick-or-treating for at least two hours. Emma keeps hitting our stash of candy to pass out to trick-or-treaters, getting "the good stuff". Six bags of candy...hope it lasts. We run out EVERY year. Well, this is a first...we didn't do the whole "pumpkin carving" thing this year. Instead we decorated them like Potato Head Pumpkins. Not only was it so much easier, but the kids really got a kick out of these little masterpieces. This year we didn't get to hear Will gag as we pulled out the insides of the pumpkins...nothing grosses him out like gutting a pumpkin. I think he prefers this technique.

The One Year Book of Hope by Nancy Guthrie. Such an amazing book. If you are going through a really difficult time in your life....get ready to be encouraged.

I found this book on my front porch one day. A very dear friend had dropped it off when she heard about something difficult going on in my life. Aren't friends such a blessing? So thankful for her...and this book. I have treasured it ever since I received it. The pages in this book are filled with encouraging words and scriptures. In the past week I've been hearing how others have also been encouraged by this book during their time of sorrow or grief.

"Processing pain and embracing its lessons is a daily endeavor. Every day we need a little more light to illumine our darkness. That’s what I want the One Year Book of Hope to be for you—a daily dose of truth and comfort," Nancy Guthrie. Such an amazing testimony she has...and an example of how God can love us through the very rough times of life. Hope...I love that word, don't you? It's a word that drives me to the throne of God. He is my hope.

I've been checking out so many blogs lately. I feel like I'm "dreaming" as I read through them. All of the great recipes, the fabulous family photos, the charming houses, oh and the beautiful "craft rooms"...wow. I find myself asking the question...I wonder if things are really that "great" for these people. It's so easy (and tempting) to make "life" look amazing in a blog. To want to portray things to be maybe even better than they really are. Not that things aren't pretty great, but just to "enhance" things...as if the real deal isn't post worthy. Maybe it's just me...it probably is. It's back to the whole "keeping up with the Jone's" kind of a thing.

I always wonder if others feel that way too, when you peek into the lives of so many...and only see the parts of life that we want to share. I don't want to "disrespect" my family nor would I want anyone else to their family. Nobody wants to put pics up of their kids doing the really crud things or take pictures to share that would indicate things can get a little crazy or out of hand. However, are we guilty of wanting to make things look better than they really were or are at times to try to win over some-one's approval. I'm guilty of that at times. It's something I really want to guard against here.

Also, feeling guilty about "envying" what I see in the lives of others...through their blogs. Crazy, I know. So, on the flip...I love reading those that seem to share a little bit of everything. Maybe it just makes me feel better about myself, or maybe it's because life isn't always so pretty. Ok, now that I got that off of my chest...sigh. Don't wait for some crazy post from me, with the house in complete chaos, or one of the kids in the middle of a tantrum. Or better yet, me in the middle of a tantrum! Just know that I'm going to try to be TRUE to who I am and who we are as a family.

One of My very favorite times of the year, that's for sure. I love the smells, the colors, the activities, the decor, and the food...and not in that particular order. I can't wait to take the kids to the pumpkin patch, carve pumpkins, hit the cider mill in Louisburg, s'mores, hot cocoa, "Fall Festivals"...and more. So fun.

Emma decided to join the Brownie troop at school. She is SO excited. For most of the other girls in her troop this is their second year...Emma's first, so you know what that means? I'm going to be real busy helping a little Brownie get caught up on her badges! Also, if you want cookies, now you know where you can find them. Just give us a few weeks and we'll be hitting the streets. Nah, but she is looking forward to this BIG year...I am too.

I can't believe that my little boy is turning four! As I always say, it's just going by so fast. It feels like I'm going from one birthday to the next. We had a fun time celebrating Will's birthday with family and friends at 'Suck-e-Sees's' as Will calls it. He just might be onto something with that. (You know, the place that we adults love to hate.) The kids LOVE going to Chuck-e-Cheese's. Can you believe that we actually had the place all to ourselves? It was great. Nobody else there for most of the party. Then the mob hit towards the end. Here are a few pictures as I tried my best to capture the day. I made the same mistake that I always make...I'm not in a single picture. I've got to do a better job of remembering to pass the camera to someone at some point. (Not that I WANT to be in the pictures...it would just be nice for the kids to know I actually attended their 'special' events)...

Here is the portrait of Will that my grandmother did a couple of years ago. Isn't it amazing?!?! She was 85 when she did this. You should see the photograph that she used to make the portrait...incredible. I wrote in the previous post that she has to prop her arm up on something that she put together so she can do these. When I say it's a "labor of love" it really is! Grandma did one of Emma too. It's a little harder to get to...so I left it in the frame. Again, she did a great job on her portrait as well. These are pieces of work that we will cherish forever.

Today we celebrated my Grandmother's 87th birthday. She is in great health. You wouldn't believe that she is 87. I know the world looks very different than she remembers it as a child. I love to hear her tell stories about her childhood and how life was back then. Emma loves to visit her Great Grandma. We don't see her nearly enough...and when I do...I regret the time I've let pass without visits. She is a lovely woman and has so many great qualities. Grandma is a fantastic artist....STILL! I'll post a drawing she did of Will just a year or two ago. It's amazing...she has to prop her arm up when she does these portraits. Every great grandchild gets to have this labor of love. There are a crew of great grand-kids...Grandma had six of her own so, that leads to many grand-kids and greats. Happy Birthday Grandma...we love you.

Kids in the Kitchen...

Do all kids love to be in the kitchen helping? I know mine do. Emma especially. She has a whole lot of her daddy in her when it comes to food. They talk about food, think about food, watch t.v. shows about food, look at pictures of food, cook food, and of course eat food. I like food...but I just want to eat it. Maybe if I thought about it more instead of eating it that would be better...not gonna happen. Anyhoo, when Emma found out that you can actually have a career as a "food critic" I think she about fell on the floor...."NO WAY" she squealed!! I am guessing that medical school might be out of her plan now. The kids made dinner last night...PIZZA! They have so much fun cooking...and they seem to eat a better when they make the food. If only the mess was a little smaller. Why do smaller people make bigger messes? I must admit...it is good to be in the kitchen together as a family. We all enjoy it...I just have to set aside my "must keep the kitchen clean" hat, and put on my "let's throw down the flour and let the dough pounding begin" poncho! ...

Oh, and the pizzas were yummy! Leftovers for lunch...that's always nice.

New York Family Vacation...

I had someone ask me if I was going to post pictures from our NYC trip or not. Well, I had planned to do that....and for whatever reason (back to school for Emma, Emma's Birthday, Will starting preschool) I think it slipped my mind! Some days I am surprised I still have a mind that is functioning. Although, I don't think it's working as speedy as it used to. We did take a family trip out to New York. Larry's brother Bobby and his wife Josephine live in Long Island. It was nice to see them and of course a few of the sights while we were there. The kids had a FANTASTIC time...I can't believe that they kept up with everyone....but, they did. Emma was most excited about The American Girl Place and Central Park. Will could not get enough of the train and the subway...such a boy. I enjoyed hanging out with the family and seeing NYC through the eyes of children. It's a GREAT city and a great trip for a family! We made lots of memories....here is my attempt to sum up the trip...

Looking forward to going back again...always something new to do in NEW YORK!

Preschool Time......

Again...I just can't get over how quickly the kids are growing. Today was Will's first day of Preschool. He was so excited last night that we didn't have to ask him twice to get ready for bed. He had his Buz Lightyear backpack set out and ready to take along with him for this very special day!! Will's teacher is AWESOME! Miss Leslie you are the best! Emma had Miss Leslie in Preschool too....she is so great with these little ones. I just love her and that Will gets to be in her class too. OF COURSE I took a few pictures to capture this big day! In the van on the way to school Will asked me...."Mommy, how long am I going to be small?"....I wanted to boo hoo, but found my "everything's amazing" mommy smile and answered..."Not long enough!"

We celebrated the big day Pizza Hut buffet style! Will is asking when he gets to go back to school. Yeah, that's a great sign!

It was a really hot day....guess that's what you want when you are having a pool party, huh? We had a fun time celebrating Emma's 8th birthday at the pool with family and friends. I can't believe that she is eight!! I know...that's what every parent says. It's true though....the time does seem to be flying by. Once they hit elementary school it's like one year just flows into the next and before you know it....SHE'S EIGHT!

The Lake....

I said that I would post more about our time at the lake so here it is. We spent a few days at the lake (Heber Springs) with Larry's family. It's Larry's father's side of the family that have a house....no, not a house, not really sure the exact term... you'll see what I mean in the pictures below. It's pretty amazing when I think about it. Not amazing because of the way it's decorated or because it's bigger or better than anything you could imagine. The reason I say amazing is because it's a house that Larry's father and his siblings built to provide them with a place they could all come to and spend some time together. Larry Sr. (my Larry is obviously a Jr.) is one of I think....fourteen. One of fourteen...can you imagine? I can't. Well, I can't imagine having fourteen children, but I get an idea of the craziness and what it might have been like when we visit "The Rutledge Lodge" as my kids call it.

I admire this very large family for the way that they keep in touch and put a lot of emphasis on staying connected to one another. This house has provided the family with a great gathering place and given a lot of people some really fun memories! Yes, it's a busy place to be...Yes, you have to wait on a bathroom...Yes, it's not easy to sleep all packed in....Yes, it requires team effort and everyone doing their part to get meals ready and the kitchen cleaned up afterwards.... Yes, it takes a beating with that many people coming in and out (I've actually been there with about 75 other "Rutledges" at one time!). However, it serves it's purpose! It's purpose...to provide a place for a family of fourteen along with their spouses, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to be together and continue building great memories.

My kids love coming here to the lake and seeing their cousins. I laugh at my Larry when he sits and tries to remember who's who and what's the name of so and so's daughter, etc. Can you imagine trying to keep up with that many family members? My mom is one of seven and my father one of six....such "small" families they have in comparison to this one.

So, here are some pictures that might give you a better idea of how this whole thing works. By the way....you will notice there is ONE HUGE sleeping room and only TWO bathrooms! Sounds crazy I know....it is! In a good way. So kuddos to the Rutledges for making time spent with family (A BIG FAMILY) very important!

The kids had so much fun cruisin' around at Trike Nite. Our Preschool Team at church does such an amazing job providing fun things for families to do together. Trike Nite was a hit and you couldn't have asked for better weather. A beautiful night hanging out with friends....very fun.

The Ring Tiger....

Will was so excited to be the "ring tiger" in Dane and Lizzie's wedding. He refused to be called the ring bearer...as he was hearing it the "ring bear". When we went for his fitting and to bring his tuxedo home he showed great concern. "Where is my black and orange striped suit for the wedding?", is what he kept asking me. I think he was a bit disappointed to not wear a tiger suit and roar down the isle. All in all he had a good time and did a great job. Now, big sister, well she was a little jealous of her brother. During the picture taking time just before the wedding I found her sitting in the back of the church looking sad. When I asked her what was wrong she replied, "Is anyone going to take even one picture of me today?". It's tough sharing the spotlight isn't it? The wedding was very nice and we enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Must admit we pretty much crashed afterwards. Here are a few pictures of the big day.....

Father's Day is almost here......

This year is just flying by! I can't believe how quickly time seems to be passing. Wasn't it just Mother's Day? Before I know it the kids will be making their Christmas lists and I'll be dragging out the decorations. Ok....it's way to soon to be talking like that. I apologize if I have begun to stress any of you out. What it is time for ....is celebrating and honoring all of the amazing dads out there loving and caring for their kiddos no matter how grown up they are.

The role of a father is so important in a child's life. I know that for me, my father has played a very significant role in my life. He has taught me so many things....to appreciate the beauty of God's creations, how important family is, to serve others, to trust God in all things, and the most important thing he's taught me...that you can love a child that you meet when she is about six years old as if she were the one you held in your arms at day one! Many of you don't know that my dad and I haven't always been "father and daughter". Sometimes it's even hard for me to believe that we haven't just always been together. He and my mother married when I was about six years old and he then adopted me when I was around the age of seven. He filled a huge void that I had like nobody else could have filled.

I still have a special place in my heart for men that marry single moms and become husbands and fathers all at once. I can't imagine how that must feel. It takes a special person to be able to do that. It also takes a special person to adopt a child. Adoption is such an amazing thing, isn't it? To bring a child into your life and choose to love and care for them is such a gift. It's a gift that I was given that changed my life forever and that's a good thing....a REALLY good thing! I love my dad so much and am so proud of who he is. He's such an example of living your life for the Lord and does it with such humility. I can tell you that if he reads this he will play down any and every good thing that is said about him....he's just that wonderful. Dads are such special people.....Yeah Dads! Happy "almost" Father's Day....

Memorial Day 2009....spent with my favorite people out at the K...Kauffman Stadium. Home of the Royals for those of you that aren't so familiar with Kansas City. It was a lot of fun. The stadium has really been transformed into quite a fun, family friendly place to be these days. Unfortunately we made it out a game or two too late. Seems they aren't doing nearly as well as they were earlier on in the season. Oh well. We still had fun and now the kids can say they've been to a Royal's game. That's pretty important, ya know.

Mother's Day Blessing....

It's almost Mother's Day! I can't wait. Will was telling me today about the "surprise" he is going to make for me. He is making me a picture of a heart with sidewalk chalk out on the driveway. I'll start working on my "surprised" face! Love that little fella! I have so much to be thankful for. I have been blessed with the most amazing mother EVER! I could write a book about why she should be the mother of not only the year, or the decade...but the Best Mother Ever! She is pretty incredible...no doubt about it! However, my post today is about another mother I know who has WOW'd the socks off of me over and over....my sister, Libby! These past nine months have been pretty rough for her to say the least. Libby is the mother of two very special little girls Audrey (2) and Molly (9 months). She is a full time Wife and Mother....and a part time everything else. I don't know how she does it all...and with such grace! WOW! You see her youngest, Molly, has been on a feeding tube since she was about 7 weeks old. Libby and her husband, Jon, have really been through it....with all of the tests, doctors visits, other specialists to see, in home therapists, tube feedings, putting the tube in and taking it out on their own, weight checks, special formulas, medications, fears, worries,and concerns for her future. All of this (and so much more) with a two year old to care for as well. It has been stressful to say the least as you can well imagine. The hard part is they really weren't given any definite reason for Molly's struggle with eating....or in this case, not eating. I remember when Libby told me she'd received a call from the children's hospital here and was told they couldn't do anything else for little Molly. I know that was hard to hear. Can't imagine feeling like you have nobody to help you help your baby. Well, looking back I think that phone call was a blessing in disguise. When Libby and Jon couldn't be helped here they were sent on to St. Louis to see a specialist. Long story short the doctor there felt strongly that Molly needed to come off of this tube and stop all medications. I'm sure there had to have been a part of them that thought, "We've come all of this way to hear this?". What a blessing this trip to St.Louis was. I am happy...ELATED to report to all of you that Molly has been off of the feeding tube for about a month now and is doing GREAT! Praise God! I can tell my sister has had a load lifted! Like I said she has amazed me through all of this. I truly don't know how she handled this with such strength except that God was and is in control and gave Libby every bit of what she needed to care for and love Molly through it all! That's what being a mom is all about. Doing whatever, whenever, and however you have to for your child. The love of a mother for her child is strong....and in this case unmeasurable! Libby, I am so happy for you this Mother's Day. I can't tell you how very proud of her I am and honored to call her my sister and my friend! So, needless to say...I will be counting my blessings BIG time this Mother's Day! SO, blessing #1...(this could take a while). Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms who wear your hearts on your sleeves and give a part of you away every day! You go girls! .....

Just another day in the life of siblings. Here Emma and Will are playing school. As you can see Big Sister Emma is playing teacher, and has lots planned for her favorite student...Will. However, things turn very sour when Will decides he doesn't want Emma telling him what to do anymore. I have tried telling him that this will not change any time soon. I know from first hand experience that we big sisters don't really ever out grow that role....we just don't like to look at it as "telling" our siblings what to do. I like to think I am "encouraging" my little sis', not so sure she would agree with that. Ha! So, as you can see from these photos that the school day ends with tears! I'm sure many teachers can relate....

In My Daughter's Eyes

It is so true...."In my daughter's eyes, I am a hero. I am strong and wise and I know no fear, but the truth is plain to see she was sent to rescue me. I see who I am and who I want to be, in my daughter's eyes." I love the words to this song. They remind me of how special the relationship is between a mother and a daughter. It's been one of those weeks when I feel like I am failing left and right as her mother. Barely listening to the stories she's telling me, getting caught up in the busy days and nights, rushing through the bedtime prayers....and then it hits. Oh, what am I doing...what message am I sending her? What kind of a mother am I? Why do we take for granted the ones we love most? Here I have this precious little girl, this gift from God who loves me in spite of all of my weaknesses and shortcomings. I'm constantly amazed at how she can forgive me when I haven't been at all the mother I want to be. Not only does she forgive, but she seems to forget. I pray that God will help me to be the mother that He desires for me to be. That I will treasure the time I have with her. It does go by so very fast. I was flipping through some old photos of Emma when she had just turned two. It seems like it was yesterday that she was that little. I am so glad for tomorrows. Tomorrow I am going to hug her tighter, hold her longer, and listen more closely to the very important stories she shares with me. ( I say tomorrow because she is sound asleep in her bed right now.) Looking forward to tomorrow!...

When I Grow Up....

These pictures were taken at The Children's Museum in Omaha over spring break. Will enjoyed dressing up like a fire fighter and relaxing in the Oval Office, part of the White House Exhibit. When we were looking through these pictures the kids started to dream about who and what they want to be when they "grow up". That always makes for a fun conversation, doesn't it? Emma started with her, "I want to be a nurse because medical school is WAY too long". Then Will chimed in with his usual, "I want to drive a train"...boy does he ever!! I followed with the standard motherly response telling them they can be anything they want to be and do anything they want to do. Later on something hit me. What a teachable moment that could have been about God's will and perfect plan for each individual. I think I'll do some rephrasing next time. Maybe instead of saying you can do or be whoever you want to be...how much greater to share that you can be everything that God wants you to be and his plan for your precious life is AMAZING! ("For I know the plans I have for you " declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11) It's so much more fulfilling to seek God's will than our own...so Emma and Will, I cannot wait to see what God has in store for you both. Love you!

Spring Break in Omaha

We had a great time in Omaha spending some time with Larry's parents, otherwise known as "Nana and Papa". Isn't it always so nice to just take a break from the normal routine and focus on one another without all of the usual distractions. Indeed it is! That's exactly what we did. If you haven't had a chance to visit the Omaha Zoo you really should. We enjoyed it ...the kids love the Desert Dome, my favorite is always the Aquarium. I love the jellyfish tank. There's something so peaceful about watching them in a dark room all lit up. Just spectacular! After spending a day at the Children's Museum (also great), Emma said she remembered it being much larger. I had to inform her that she's the one changing sizes on us! Anyway, I am always grateful for time to devote to the one's I love most...doing really, not much of anything, just being together.

Isn't it just like kids to be so thrilled with something as simple as a sucker...or candy on a stick. Why do we adults try so hard....just keep it SIMPLE! I learn so much from my children. Maybe one day I'll grow up to be like them!
